DEMOLITION

CHANGING FACE OF THE TOWN CENTRE

This aerial shot shows the spread of the Town Centre buildings by the start of the 1990s - the ‘retail warehouses’ have been added to the bottom left of the photo, replacing the Golden Eagle. Fleming House is visible to the upper left of the complex.

Future changes would take away most of the green space surrounding the Town Centre, with that directly above the Woolco store becoming Asda’s new shop in the late 1990s, and the area near the bottom of the picture becoming the new Tesco Express in the mid 2000s.

This is an edited and annoted section of a larger photo, which is on display in Cumbernauld Museum.

MAPS & PLANS

A plan of the Phase 4 shopping mall from November 1994.

By this stage the Argos store had opened, which replaced the units previously occupied by John Menzies and Mothercare.

These photos show the escalators in the Phase 4 mall - the one below is from the same time period as the map on the right.

RETAIL

MADNESS

Both big supermarkets changed their names in the 1990s, with Gateway becoming Asda, and William Low becoming Tesco. Later in the decade Asda moved to their new purpose built store as demolition began on the former Phase 3 of the centre. Goldbergs and What Everyone Wants closed down, and Argos opened in Phase 4.
