FUTURE

THE END?

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

North Lanarkshire Council completed the purchase of the various parts of the Town Centre in 2023, in order to proceed with their redevelopment plans. This included Phase One, Phase Two and Phase Four of the building - the Antonine Centre was not part of the sale and will remain in its current format.

The council have stated that the redevelopment is needed because the building no longer fits with “the community’s vision of what they need from a modern town centre.” The existing buildings will be demolished and replaced with a reimagined Town Centre area.

The new Town Hub would be designed to include a number of public service facilities such as the Health Centre, Library, council offices and community centre, bringing them together in one building.

The town centre area is also planned to include a primary and a secondary school and associated buildings.

There are two Concept designs currently being considered by NLC. The first will close and remove Central Way and build a bus station, while the second will retain the road (and existing bus stops) but limit the speed and reduce it to a single carriageway. Both designs can be seen in the gallery below.
